This article discusses the social characteristics of the Inca Empire from an emic and etic (inside and outside of the Inca civilization) anthropological perspective. The author comments on the history of historical and anthropological research into the Inca society, including works by Isabel Yaya, Tom Zuidema, and Alfred Métraux.
