- Abstract
Objectives: This study evaluates the increase or decrease of empathy of medical students during their university training. Methods:We used the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) byAjzen (1991) for this study, which looks at the general intention to showempathy and the three TPB-components behavior belief, control belief, and normative belief. First, a pilot questionnaire was given to 50 students to collect their salient beliefs. Based on the results, a questionnaire was developed and filled out by 131 students during their second and fourth year of their studies. Results: A multiple regression analysis showed that general intention to show empathy is well predicted by the three TPB components, with normative belief being the strongest predictor. Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in the general intention to show empathy during the second and fourth year of studies. One possible reason students stated was an increase in stress, personal discomfort, time pressure, excessive demands, and difficulties distancing themselves from patients and their own feelings. There was no gender-specific difference regarding general intention. Discussion: A significant decrease of intention to show empathy in students during their studies could be shown. Further studies would be necessary to evaluate whether there is a correlation between the general intention and the actual behavior.
