- Abstract
The article profiles American lawyer Ella Mae Backus who was deemed as a prominent figure in the legal services sector in Western Michigan. Backus reportedly worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office from 1903 to 1938 whose accomplishments were remarkable as women faced numerous challenges in the legal profession during the 19th century. Also discussed are Backus' career in government service, academic background, and historiography of female lawyers.
