- Abstract
This article aims to make the comparative analysis of the Tempest by William Shakespeare and its Lithuanian translations by Tomas Venclova and Antanas Miškinis, in an attempt to explain how semantic elements are transferred in the translations. The research focuses on the chronotope and the ways of creating characters. It has shown that theatrical references disappear but the meaning of mythical space is retained. The analysis of the character creation principles and their adherence problems has revealed that some meanings of the polysemic central characters are lost; while, the meanings of the schematic minor characters are retained. The problems of transfer of meaning and reception are caused by polysemy of words, words or phrases lost in translation following the loss of meaning and the Lithuanian cultural and political context (possible references to Christianity are removed in the translation by Miškinis that was made in soviet times).
