- Abstract
Turkey is under the influence of the North Atlantic low pressure centers and Siberian high pressure centers during winter months. The moist and temperate frontal systems, especially from the Mediterranean, which enter south-southwest of the country, cause effective precipitation for 7-10 days under suitable conditions. Mersin province has undergone rapid population increase due to the migration it has been receiving for the last 30 years and has faced with the problems of urbanization which has been unfavorable. The floods and rising waves that occurred in Mersin city center and some districts of Mersin on December 29, 2016 cannot be considered independently from these problems. Beginning on December 20, 2016, flood disasters, which resulted in the death of 5 people, were experienced as a result of heavy rainfall which lasted almost 10 days continuously. Our research is a climatic view of the flood disaster on 29 December 2016. When this analysis was carried out, synoptic maps, radar images and past meteorological data obtained from the General Directorate of Meteorology were used. The study also looked at the link between climate change and extreme precipitation
