- Abstract
The article presents a history of the laser-guided precision weapons program known as PAVE NAIL, used by the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron (TASS) of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. It overviews the development of laser-guided bombs and air navigation systems by the U.S. Tactical Air Warfare Center (TAWC) and the defense electronics company Texas Instruments (TI) and chronicles the use of the PAVE NAIL system throughout the war in bombing campaigns against the North Vietnamese on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, to complete military reconnaissance, and in rescue missions to recover downed U.S. soldiers.
