- Authors
Cohen, Asher; Susser, Bernard
- Abstract
The article refers to the success of Reform Judaism in the United States and discusses the weakness of the Reform Judaism movement in Israel. Topics include Reform Judaism's antipathy to nationalist Zionism, the development of Progressive Judaism in Israel, and the established influence and official status of Orthodox Judaism. Concerns about American assimilation and the weakening of the Israeli Jewish identity are mentioned. The de-legitimization of Reform Judaism in Israel by the Orthodox rabbinate who refuse to recognize the legality of Reform rituals such as weddings and conversions is mentioned. The liberal universalist character of Reform Jews and the level of Jewishness among secular Jews are noted.
