- Abstract
The study hypothesis was that airline pilots with higher scores on the dark tetrad measures would have higher impulsivity ratings and more pronounced non-reflective thinking. The study participants were pilots from an international airline. The mean age was 36.5 years (M = 36.57, SD = 10.88), with a total of 61 participants. Four questionnaires were used in the study: the Short Dark Triad scale (SD3; Paulhus & Williams, 2002), which measures narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism; the CRT (Cognitive Reflection Test, Frederick, 2005), which measures reflective thinking; the Comprehensive Assessment of Sadistic Tendencies (CAST, Buckels et al., 2014), which is a measure for "everyday sadism" in a non-clinical sample; and the Barrat Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11; Patton et al., 1995), which is a survey designed to assess the personality / behavior construct of impulsivity. The hypothesis was partially confirmed. The cognitive reflection test did not exhibit significant relationships with the dark tetrad scores and impulsivity. On the other hand, participants with higher scores on the dark tetrad measures had higher impulsivity scores. The dark tetrad variables also significantly predicted impulsivity in the airline pilot sample.
