- Abstract
The chemic and inventor Tobias Gruber was a younger brother of the Jesuit general Gabriel Gruber, the designer of Ljubljana canal and palace. Tobias' work on new chemistry measurement devices, the content of minerals in mineral water sources, and research of the structure of basalt is discussed. Tobias' scientific work in chemistry and related fields was so relevant that he was appointed for three terms on the influential position of president of Bohemian Scientific society which later developed into Bohemian Academy of Sciences. Tobias was a secretary of the Society until he passed away. He lived in Ljubljana and its broader surroundings just for three or four years. His brothers Gabriel and Anton, both Ljubljana professors of technical disciplines, lived in Ljubljana much longer and the same did their mother Josefa who died in her villa Podrožnik.
