- Abstract
The article presents a study conducted in 1956 to test the relative efficacy of field trips and slides taken of the same region in teaching earth science in the ninth grade at Central High School in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The experiment tested the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the amount of information gained in field trips compared with sections which viewed slides under the supervision of a teacher. Sample questions in the tests are provided. There is a significant gain in knowledge in geology as measured by the tests used in both methods. Experimental evidence indicates a superiority on the part of the field trip.
