- Abstract
Preparing teachers for urban school environments is a challenge for teacher preparation programs. With today's changing student demographics in public schools, teacher education programs realize that their candidates need more than a "one size fits all" general education curriculum. Tomorrow's prospective teachers need a "specialized knowledge of the lives and learning styles of urban children -- first hand experiences in urban schools and an understanding of the community from which the child comes. This study qualitatively examined the experiences of elementary pre-service teachers from a predominantly white university in the semester prior to student teaching in an urban summer enrichment program. The study also examined the pre-service teachers' experiences in student teaching as a result of their participation in the program.
