The article presents an overview of the alcohol policy of Norway. A historical account on the role of beer drinking in the Nordic countries is given. In Norway, alcohol is viewed as a ritual constituent, a marketable product, a sinful concoction, a needless extravagance, a vital nutrient and economic resource, a cause of social problems and a public health concern.
