- Title
Costs, competition hit Tirupur textile exports.
- Abstract
This article forecasts that overseas sales of knitwear production of Tirupur, the town in Tamil Nadu famous as a hub of textile industry in India, will grow not grow over 5% in 2008 to March 2009. It explains that competition from Asian rivals and increased production costs impact local producers. Data suggest that knitwear exports from Tirupur declined 10% to Indian Rupee (Rs) 9,950 crore in the year ended March 2008, from Rs. 11,000 crore in the previous fiscal year. Despite the decline of India's rupee by some 15% in 2008, the knitwear exports still struggle to reach 5% growth.
