- Abstract
The article profiles Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington. He proved himself to be one of the greatest commanders of all time. Under his command, the British army reached the height of its fame. He won his way through all difficulties and beat many of Napoleon's best generals. He crossed the Douro River within three weeks of his landing and drove Nicolas Soult, French Marshal, out of Oporto. He gained his greatest victories over French at the battle of Salamanca. In addition, the fame of this victory spread fast through Europe and had a great effect on the minds of men.
