- Abstract
This article presents a novel method for constructing dynamic S-boxes based on a high-performance spatiotemporal chaotic system. Initially, we innovatively combine two-dimensional coupled map lattices with elementary cellular automata, employing the latter to provide random coupling indices and perturbations for the former, thereby constructing a spatiotemporal chaotic system with superior chaotic characteristics. Through the analysis of Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy, bifurcation diagrams, output uniformity, and inter-lattice correlations, we find that the system exhibits more complex chaotic behavior, an expansive parameter space, more uniform output sequences, and exceedingly low inter-lattice correlations. Consequently, this system is highly suitable for cryptographic applications. Subsequently, we designed a dynamic S-box algorithm based on this system. We analyzed the various properties of the generated S-boxes. The analysis reveals that S-boxes constructed using this method exhibit exceptional performance and possess the capability to resist multiple security attacks, including linear and differential attacks.
