Discusses the arrest of palaeoanthropologist Martin Pickford, who claims to have found the oldest known human ancestor Orrorin tugenensis, on charges of collecting without a permit in Kenya. Accusation by Andrew Hill, chair of anthropology at Yale University in Connecticut, of encroaching upon his site in the Tugen Hills; Allegations by Pickford that Richard Leakey, the former director-general of the National Museums of Kenya and former head of the Kenyan civil service, incited the arrest.
