- Abstract
Stephanoscyphus planulophorus Werner, 1971 is a solitary scyphopolyp, which is endemic in submarine cves of the Western Mediterranean. Its life history is unique in the reduction of the medusa, which is represented only as an embryonic stage, and in the absence of germ cells (Werner, 1971). Histological and trans-electronmicroscopic inyestigationa of these phenomena confirm the results of the macroscopic observations. S. planulophorus is one of the few examples of a true cave-living Cnidarian. Therefore, the specialized life cycle can be interpreted as an adaptation to special conditions of the environment.
