The author discusses a study published on March 31, 2016 in the "American Journal of Genetics" which indicates that fetal DNA is altered by maternal smoking. Topics covered include the epigenetic inheritance theory that environmental influences can affect genes, development-related genes affected by smoking, and the connection between smoking during pregnancy and health problems in children. Also mentioned are the blood-borne exposure to smoking and associations between methylation and smoking.
