- Abstract
The Odenwald School was a place of sexual violence that was considered a beacon of progressive education. Between 1970 and 1990, at least 21 educational or technical staff members of the school were accused as perpetrators. A study analyzes the structural conditions that enabled this violence and shows that the school's system of perpetrators would not have existed without administrative, organizational, and pedagogical support. The perpetrators often had insufficient professional qualifications. The school benefited from teachers who were cheap labor and contributed to the educational brilliance of the school. The Munich study "The Odenwald School as a Beacon of Progressive Education and a Site of Sexual Violence" examines the cases of sexual abuse at the Odenwald School. The study shows that the former headmaster Becker was supported by an influential network and that the students had limited interpretation possibilities due to the lack of language and the cult surrounding Becker. The investigation is based on interviews with former students, staff members, and experts. The study reveals how authoritarian the so-called anti-authoritarian pedagogy of the Odenwald School actually was and describes its effects on the students. The study makes an important contribution to addressing the issue of sexual violence at the Odenwald School.
