- Abstract
Today's teachers are faced with considerable changes in society and school that affect not only their daily practice in the classroom but also the status of their profession. While societal developments point to a strengthening of professionalism, the recent reforms of the education sector entail the danger of deprofessionalization. A feasible way out of this unfortunate situation might consist in an internal differentiation of the teaching profession. The author presents a pragmatic proposal that rests on the premise that the teachers' autonomy over the core of their work should be restored.
