- Abstract
The article examines the consumption of Porites astreoides coral spat by histophagic ciliates using time-lapse photography. Helicostoma nonatum ciliate was found consuming tissue from adult colonies of both P. astreoides and Montastraea faveolata in flow-through aquaria. This species of Helicostoma has been connected with the brown jelly disease in aquarium corals and with brown band disease on the Great Barrier Reef. The appearance of mortality events on coral spat in natural reef settings is unknown.
