- Title
The deepest, zooxanthellae scieractinian corals in the world?
- Authors
Kahng, S. E.; Maragos, J. E.
- Abstract
The article presents information on zooxanthellate scleractinian corals, which are deepwater corals that occur far below the depth limits of recreational scuba diving in clear oceanic waters. The deepwater corals in Hawaii are associated with insular shelves which surround most islands, and which extend laterally several km offshore to depths of 110-120 m. Deep-water surveys of Maui, Lanai, and Kauai in Hawaii in 2001-2004 showed Leptoseris species to be dominant on hard substrata below 60 m with benthic cover exceeding 90% in some areas.
