- Abstract
This paper presents new data on the algal biodiversity of the community of Castilla La - Mancha, where algal species have been traditionally poorly studied. Their knowledge is especially relevant in the headwaters of rivers as they are considered by the Water Framework Directive references areas for the conservation of pristine environments. This project has been focused on the study of freshwater algae in the province of Albacete, data are provided from 2 genera and 15 species hitherto not cited for the provincial flora. Bangia atropurpurea and Hildenbrandia rivularis stand out for being the most southern cites of the Iberian Peninsula, on the other hand Thorea hispida stands out due to its preferably tropical distribution. An analysis has also been made of the total number of known species of the province to date, focusing on the two main basins of the province (Segura and Júcar basin) where there are notable differences. The Segura basin is the most studied and the one with the best water quality as indicated by the presence of species such as Nostoc fuscescens, Nostoc sphaericum, Microcoleus vaginatus, Microcoleus subtorulosus, Rivularia dura and Phormidium inundatum, among others. The Júcar basin in general presents a lower quality, although the good condition of the rivers of the south zone where Microcoleus vaginatus, Sheathia boryana and Microspora aequabilis var.minor have been found to be of a positive note.
