- Title
THE NUTRIENT CONTENT OF THE SOIL AND ROOT SYSTEM OF A DRY HEATH ECOSYSTEM.
- Authors
CHAPMAN, S. B.
- Abstract
The article offers information a study concerning the nutrient content of the soil and root system of a dry heath ecosystem. It provides preliminary estimates of the root biomass and of the amounts of plant nutrients contained within the rooting zone of a lowland heath ecosystem and to consider them in relation to the above ground vegetation and litter. It reports that the weights and nutrient contents of roots extracted from the soil under Calluna heathland in the Poole basin of Dorset are given. It mentions that the weights of root extracted from heathland vegetation of different ages are not significantly different and it is suggested that the underground components of the ecosystem are relatively stable despite the loss and regrowth of the above ground vegetation.
