- Abstract
We have studied the domain of applicability of a model of continuum mechanics based on the Navier-Stokes equations for the hypersonic flow of a viscid gas past a plate with sharp leading edge. An asymptotic analysis of the hypersonic flow of a rarefied gas is based on the kinetic equation for gases with internal degrees of freedom. The singularity and nonmonotonic character in the distribution of some macroscopic functions at the sharp leading edge of the plate have been studied. The results of analysis are compared to the results of straightforward numerical simulation using the Monte Carlo method.
