- Title
George Engelmann's Barometer.
- Authors
Arenson, Adam
- Abstract
The essay examines the experience of botanist George Engelmann in St. Louis, Missouri, during the U.S. Civil War, with the author drawing a link between Engelmann's weather measurements and barometer use and the ways in which St. Louis acted as a metaphorical barometer for the development of the war. It is argued that meteorological observation helped scientists better understand the American landscape. Also noted are Engelmann's reactions to the war, Emancipation, and Reconstruction.
