- Abstract
The article presents an analysis of stresses and breaking loads for class I cavity preparations in mandibular first molars. As stated, the crown is under considerable compressive stress when a healthy tooth is in function. A few parts of the crown undergo tensile stress and the magnitude of this stress is only about one seventh of the compressive stress. The tensile strength is about one seventh of the compressive strength. When the contacts of a noncarious tooth bearing the axial forces are at multipoint, the breaking load for the tooth will be maximum and stress distributions will be most suitable. As stated, this is the most favorable situation for the health of the tooth.
