- Abstract
New Spain's religious orders have been studied from many angles, particularly in terms of their role in evangelization and education and in their contributions to the historiography of New Spain. The activities of the Fransiscan order during the 17th Century have received special attention. This article deals with aspects of their 17th Century activities that still remain relatively unexamined. It examines the voluminous files that aspirants to the order had to present in order to be admitted, which offer a perspective on the social composition of the monks of Mexico's Province of the Holy Gospel, as well as the connections of the families of these monks with some of the most prominent social groups in New Spain during the 17th Century.
