An essay is presented on Reuben Alley, a Baptist journalist and editor of the Virginia newspaper the "Religious Herald." It focuses on his defense of academic freedom during debates between moderates and fundamentalists of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). The author explores Alley's responses to a 1962-1963 controversy surrounding professor Ralph Elliott's interpretation of the Bible's book of Genesis and the 1958 firing of professors from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
