- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC), established in November 1961, focusing particularly on Reverend Doctor Gardner Calvin Taylor, one of its founders. Taylor was born in 1918 in Louisiana, graduated from Leland College, completed his seminary education at Oberlin School of Theology, and married Laura Bell Scott in 1941. He was pastor at churches in locales such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Brooklyn, New York. His relationship with civil rights leaders such as the Reverends Martin Luther King, Jr. and Joseph Harrison Jackson is explored. Other topics include the civil rights movement, the 1960 U.S. presidential election, and the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott of 1955-1956.
