- Title
Principles over Popularity: The Political Career of Congressman Brooks Hays.
- Authors
Williams, C. Fred
- Abstract
The article features the political career of the Southern Baptist Brooks Hays. Hays became a federal bureaucrat in the U.S. Department of Agriculture monitoring food relief efforts in Arkansas, which brought him into close contact with the sharecroppers and tenant farmers and he became sympathetic to their needs. His loss in the 1958 election made him a national figure and a symbol for moderates.
