- Abstract
Therefore, the WaySafe curriculum wasdesigned to increase positive decision-makingskills for healthy living, including skills forreducing disease risk behaviors among peoplewho were incarcerated and in the last phaseof their substance use treatment prior torelease back to the community. A primary goal of this paper is to examinegender differences in response to WaySafe. As noted above, females in participatingfacilities report significantly higher rates ofsocial problems in terms of employment, criminal involvement, and health issues priorto WaySafe. Nevertheless, there wereno significant differences between men andwomen after completing the WaySafe curriculum, suggesting that WaySafe effectiveness israther robust to pre-intervention differences, findings that have been reported in otheranalyses.
