- Abstract
In a clinical study, the effectiveness of three symptomatic therapies for acute bronchitis was examined. The study found that treatment with an antitussive, an inhaled anticholinergic, or honey is not more effective than the usual treatment. There is no evidence for the effectiveness of these therapies. The study also addresses the effectiveness of dextromethorphan in acute cough and finds that the available studies have methodological flaws and were conducted under laboratory conditions with short follow-up periods. The authors of the study do not recommend the use of dextromethorphan due to the potential for side effects and abuse, and emphasize that therapeutic restraint in otherwise healthy patients does not have a negative impact on the course of the disease.
