- Title
Calcium orchestrates apoptosis.
- Authors
Mattson, Mark P.; Chan, Sic L.
- Abstract
Demonstrates that calcium released from the endoplasmic reticulum synchronizes the mass exodus of cytochrome from the mitochondria which coordinates apoptosis. Significance of apoptosis, an evolutionary conserved form of programmed cell death, in diseases and for sculpting and maintenance of tissues; Occurrence of early and pivotal events in apoptosis in mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum; Release of cytochrome c and calcium into the cytosol as requisites for apoptosis.
