Double Statuette from Khotylevo 2: Context, Iconography, Composition.
- Authors
Gavrilov, K. N.
- Abstract
The paper is devoted to the analysis of the archaeological context and stylistic particularities of two new mobile art objects from the site of Khotylevo 2 (area B) in the Bryansk region of Russia: a double woman statuette and a schematic figurine (both carved of chalk). The character of their occurrence suggests they were intentionally placed by the ancient inhabitants of the site. They seem to be associated with a complex of cult objects. The compositional structure of the double statuette is unique for the Upper Palaeolithic small sculpture. As to the rock art the closest analogy to it can be seen in the composition of the bas relief from Angler-sur-l'Anglin.
