- Abstract
Oral cancer is a prevalent issue in India, with tobacco use being a major contributor. Dentists play a crucial role in the early detection and diagnosis of oral cancer, as well as educating patients about the dangers of tobacco use. Unfortunately, many cases of oral cancer in India are diagnosed at an advanced stage, leading to lower survival rates. Dentists can also identify non-healing ulcers, which are a common symptom of oral cavity cancers. However, there is a need for improved training and awareness among dentists to effectively diagnose and differentiate between malignant and non-malignant ulcers. A study conducted with over 800 dentists in India found that while most dentists had general knowledge about oral potentially malignant disorders and early oral cancer, there were areas for improvement in terms of completing examinations and specialized training. By addressing these gaps, dentists can make a significant impact in the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cavity cancers.
