- Abstract
This article focuses on a report of the American Sociological Association's Task Group on homosexuality. A discussion of the research literature on homosexuality convinced the Task Group that a primary need was an investigation of the extent to which gay and lesbian sociologists encounter problems in being hired and promoted and the extent to which any sociologists encounter problems in teaching courses and conducting research on homosexuality. Findings are based primarily on three surveys. In response to resolutions presented by the Sociologists' Gay Caucus and passed by the membership at the Annual Business Meeting on September 6, 1978, the Council of the American Sociological Association established a Task Group on Homosexuality. Its charge was to review existing knowledge in the sociology of homosexuality, identify topics in this field which demand research and submit its report to Council. The Council decided that the task group should consist of three members of the Sociologists' Gay Caucus and three persons who were not members of the Caucus. One of the tasks was to survey executive officers of sociology departments to assess the extent to which departments include faculty and graduate students who are known to be gay or lesbian and the extent to which such persons might encounter problems in hiring, promotion, teaching or in conducting research.
