- Abstract
Six Sigma (6σ) is a management philosophy and structure which emphasizes analysis of data to make observations, changes and provide structure to businesses and organizations. Although at heart it centers on reducing process variations and determining what is related or not related to a particular system or process, it has evolved and taken on different forms to different operations. 6σ can be seen as a rival or sometimes competing theory, methodology or philosophy to Total Quality Management (TQM), ISO, Theory of Constraints (TOC) and Lean. As it is with all of these programs, there is no one absolute way to implement and administer its points. Many companies, large and small, have implemented 6σ successfully, unsuccessfully, partially, and some have abandoned it during or even after full implementation. This paper attempts to show how and why companies have implemented 6σ, what are its strengths and weaknesses and successes for those who have taken up the journey. What are some paths to implementing 6σ and suggestions to avoid failure are also covered. At the conclusion of this paper, the paper suggests questions to contemplate for deciding if a company may need 6σ and what it should do to ensure success of the program
