- Abstract
The article reports on the hospital billing compliance imperative in relation to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) scrutiny of the hospital outpatient service units. A service units field, which is located to the right of the current procedural terminology (CPT) or healthcare common procedure coding system (HCPCS) code, provides a quantitative measure of the services provided to the patient. Moreover, it suggests that a representative from the facility's information technology (IT) department should understand the different billing scenarios related to because the billing system software must be configured appropriately for the correct number of service units.
